Benchmarking isn’t just for enthusiasts comparing scores online — it’s a genuinely useful way to confirm a hardware change actually helped, catch a problem before it gets worse, or figure out whether your PC is performing the way it should for its specs. Here’s what’s actually worth running.

Cinebench (CPU)

Free, quick to run, and widely used, which makes your score easy to compare against similar CPUs online. It specifically stress-tests raw CPU rendering performance using both single-core and multi-core tests, giving you a clear read on whether your processor is performing in line with its expected range.

3DMark (GPU, free Basic edition)

The free Basic edition covers Time Spy and Fire Strike, two of the most widely referenced GPU benchmarks, letting you compare your card’s score against a huge existing database of results from the same hardware. It’s a genuinely reliable way to confirm your GPU is performing where it should be rather than guessing from in-game frame rates alone, which are affected by CPU and settings too.

MSI Afterburner + RivaTuner (real-world, in-game benchmarking)

Instead of a synthetic test, this lets you log actual frame rate, 1% lows, temperature, and clock speeds while playing the games you actually play. Synthetic benchmarks like Cinebench and 3DMark are great for comparing raw hardware capability, but real-world logging is more useful for answering “is my actual gaming experience where it should be.”

It’s fast, free, and popular, but its scoring methodology has been widely criticized for weighting single-core CPU performance more heavily than most real-world workloads reflect, and for GPU rankings that don’t always match independent testing. How to read your results without overthinking them

  • Compare against your exact model, not a general “is this good” feeling — search your specific CPU/GPU model plus “Cinebench score” or “3DMark score” to see the typical range other people with the same hardware get.
  • A single run isn’t reliable. Background processes, temperature at the time, and even room temperature can shift results by a meaningful margin — run it two or three times and look at the consistent range, not one number.
  • A big underperformance gap is a real signal. If your score sits meaningfully below the typical range for your exact hardware, that’s worth investigating — check temperatures, confirm drivers are current, and make sure power settings aren’t capping performance.

What benchmarking won’t tell you
