The best cable management accessories for a gaming desk are simple and cheap: reusable ties, an under-desk raceway, a box for the power strip and a sleeve for the cables that drop to the PC. Together they cost less than most single peripherals.

Cables are one step in our gaming setup guide, which covers the whole desk in order.

This guide covers one proven pick for each job, and the order to install them in so you only do it once.

The picks

VELCRO Brand ONE-WRAP ties: for bundling

ONE-WRAP ties are thin hook-and-loop straps that wrap around a bundle and stick to themselves. This pack has 100 pre-cut ties, 8 inches long and half an inch wide.

They are the part of the kit you will use most. Use one every 20–30cm along a run, and keep spares for coiling the slack on long cables.

EVEO J-channel raceway: for under the desk

A J-channel is a plastic channel shaped like the letter J. Cables drop in from the open top and sit hidden under the desk edge. This kit has six 16-inch sections with adhesive already applied.

Adhesive mounts need a clean, smooth surface. Wipe the underside of the desk with isopropyl alcohol first, press each section for 30 seconds and wait a day before loading it with cables.

D-Line cable management box: for the power strip

A cable box hides the power strip and the tangle of plugs and adapters around it. D-Line’s box has slots at each end so cables can enter and leave.

Measure your power strip before ordering, since the boxes come in several lengths. Leave the lid slots clear so heat can escape.

JOTO cable sleeve: for the drop to the PC

A cable sleeve gathers several cables into one neat tube. JOTO’s sleeves close with a zipper, so you can open one up to add a cable later.

Use one for the group of cables running from the desk to a PC on the floor, or from a monitor arm down to the desk.

The order to install everything

  1. Unplug and lay out every cable. Remove anything you no longer use.
  2. Place the power strip. Mount it under the desk or put it in the cable box. Everything else routes to this point.
  3. Stick the raceway along the back underside of the desk, between your devices and the power strip.
  4. Route power cables first, then display cables, then USB. Keep some slack at each device so nothing is pulled tight.
  5. Bundle with ties every 20–30cm, and coil extra length inside the raceway or box.
  6. Sleeve the drop from the desk to the PC last.

If you use a standing desk, leave enough slack for the desk’s full height range before you tie anything down.

Cables that cross the floor where you walk or roll a chair are a trip hazard and get damaged quickly. Keep the floor run short and against the wall.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Bundling too tightly. Sharp bends strain connectors, especially DisplayPort and USB-C plugs.
  • Trapping power bricks. Large adapters run warm, so don’t tie them into the middle of a bundle.
  • Leaving no slack. If moving the monitor unplugs a cable, the run is too short.
  • Skipping labels. Tag both ends of similar-looking cables so you can find one later without undoing everything.

What to add later

A monitor arm routes display cables down its own channel and clears the desk surface. See our picks for the best monitor arms for gaming. A wider desk also gives the raceway more room, which our gaming desk size guide covers.
